White House undercuts Enron shareholders' efforts to pursue enablers of corporate fraud

A key case before the U.S. Supreme Court tests the rights of shareholders to sue outside financial and legal firms that assist corporate officials in perpetrating fraud. Rather than weigh in on the side of the shareholders, as recommended by the Securities and Exchange Commission, President Bush indicated he opposes such lawsuits as unnecessary and potentially damaging to the competitiveness of U.S. businesses.
